Principal – Artistic Director
Charmaine is the Artistic Director and Principal of Ballet Kenya (formerly Charmaine Smith Studio of Dance), established in 2011, Nairobi Kenya. Classes are conducted in Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Character Dances and Historical Dance with Workshops in Musical Theatre, Irish and Highland, by visiting guest teachers.
She completed her Academic Studies in Port Elizabeth South Africa in 1963.
1964-1966 Studied at the Royal Ballet School, London Classical Ballet, Stagecraft, Repertoire, Character Dance: Hungarian, Russian, Polish, Ukraine, Belarus and Western European Styles, French, Italian and Portuguese.. Danced Professionally and further R.A.D study , specialising in Grades and Vocational level.
Charmaine is a Registered Teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance (London) and past Mentor for the R.A.D. in East Africa. She holds the Lifetime Membership Award for loyalty and dedication to the Academy. Charmaine is qualified to teach the R.A.D. syllabus from Pre-Primary to Solo Seal level. Charmaine has achieved a 100% pass rate in all Examinations to date. She has been granted full Membership of the International Dance Council CID at UNESCO – the official world-wide organization for dance and distinguishes her as one of the leading professionals on an International level.
In the past several of her dancers progressed to professional dancers at South African Ballet Theatre, African Footprints, English National Ballet, while 3 of her male dancers went onto to become established choreographers in Italy, Germany and Washington DC.
